How it works

A .pub file is a Microsoft compound document holding every text box, shape, table and picture of the publication. This page reads it with libmspub, the open-source Publisher reader LibreOffice uses, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs inside your browser.

The text is laid out again with open fonts that have the same letter widths as the Windows fonts Publisher used, and each page is drawn as a PDF page, an image or an editable SVG on your computer. A folder of files is converted one after another and handed to your browser as a single ZIP.

Why it is free

The online converters that rank for these searches upload your file, cap it at a few megabytes and do one file at a time. This is a static web page: the work happens on your computer, so there is no server bill to recover and nothing to limit. Ads on the page cover the site.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The converter is compiled to WebAssembly and runs in this browser tab. Open DevTools, go to the Network tab and convert a file: nothing carrying your file goes out. After the page has loaded you can even disconnect from the internet and it still works.
Do I need Publisher installed?
No. The .pub file is read directly, without Publisher, Office or a Microsoft account. It works on Windows, Mac, Chromebook and Linux in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.
Which Publisher versions work?
Files from Publisher 98 through Publisher 2021 and Microsoft 365. Publisher 1.0 to 95 files can't be read, and a few unusual layouts come out empty; the page tells you instead of giving you a blank file.
Will it look exactly like Publisher?
Very close. Positions, sizes, colours and pictures are exact. Unless you have the original fonts, text is drawn in open fonts with the same letter widths (Liberation, Carlito, Caladea), so a line can occasionally break a word earlier or later. Text that wraps around pictures and WordArt effects are simplified.
Can I convert many files at once?
Yes. Choose a folder, or drop several files, and they're all converted in one run and downloaded as one ZIP.
Is it free? What's the catch?
